Good habits form early in life
December 2nd, 2009As we all know working out is key to a healthy life, but we tend to forget that diet is also vital to being healthy. If proper eating habits are engrained from an early age they will carry over into adult hood.
I have had the sad misfortune of helping out someone who has a one-year-old child in the ICU unit of a local hospital, suffering from a very serious illness that started as your basic cold and evolved into a life threatening battle of survival.
This child has grown up in a home devoid of fruits and vegetables because her caretakers do not eat them as part of their daily diets and do not understand how important it is to a developing body and immune system. Her lack of these critical food groups left her vitamin deficient and malnourished which compromised her immune system allowing her body to be overtaken by infection that affected her vital organs and was rushed into emergency surgery.
The attending DR. advised the Mom that her child has to have these foods as part of her diet because the lack of them had a big part in this illness, to which he got the answer “well she is fussy there is nothing I can do”. I strongly disagree with that and I have to stress that starting good eating habits at a young age are vital no matter what your eating habits may be. A diet of Chinese takeout McDonalds and fried foods are not in anyway good for a child (or adult for that matter).
I cannot stress enough that eating well as well as working out are two factors that go hand in hand to help prevent illness and promote a healthy life. Start early (if not start late but just start) to ensure the best for your body and health.
