In the classic fable the tortoise and the hare, we learn a valuable lesson that persistence results in triumphant. No matter how talented an individual may be, without the presence of a sound work ethic they will not succeed. Today, most individuals lack basic patience and the drive to work hard. When instant gratification is not granted, frustration sets in and the next matter that offers the promise of immediate success takes precedence. However, anything of value is worth the hard work it will take to achieve. Similar to the tortoise, the individual that will not accept failure is the one that will reign victorious.
Whatever the obstacle, face it head on and don’t give up. If others are smarter or more talented, don’t give in and don’t lose confidence. Continue with unwavering determination because dedication, hard work, a sound work ethic, strong mind and a resilient will are the ultimate equation for victory.
Build an unyielding mind and body that can conquer all that comes its way. Contact a Renegade Trainer today.

Many women feel extreme pressure to look beautiful because of the relentless images of “perfection” we are bombarded with daily. As a result of these unachievable standards, one’s self image and self worth slowly begin to erode. As a result, many women feel plastic surgery is the only solution. This is a brutal measure that all too often comes at an extreme cost – life. Is this so called “beauty” really worth the risk of death or severe disfigurement? An acquaintance of mine recently mentioned the popularity of plastic surgery amongst her friends and noted her sister, who almost died from a tummy tuck, now bears the brutality of a surgery gone terribly wrong.
Plastic surgery is nothing more than plastic confidence, a cheap imitation for the real thing. If a woman does not have self confidence before surgery, she will not have it afterwards. Confidence and self worth do not stem from our outward appearance although we are deluded into believing so. Instead, confidence comes from achievements and success stemming from hard work and feeling good on the inside. Plastic surgery is simply not the answer.
For a real confidence builder try working out. The internal transformation will be as amazing as the external one.

Kettlebell training is great teaching tool for athletes. It teaches them generate movement by utilizing the ground and root their feet and the action can be powered by the core structure.
Here is a short clip of two of my top Lacrosse players progressing through a complex. They project the weight through the hips into the arms and accept the weight and decelerate through the hamstrings.

And not to mention the simple “conditioning” aspect that is manifested by the kettlebells never leaving your hands!
Are you an athlete? Not sure how to train? Where to begin?

Forget the myriad of gadgets marketed for balance including the Bosu ball. I am sure many of you have witnessed individuals standing on a Bosu ball attempting to balance. Not only is this device absurd but it is not necessary. There are far better ways to attain balance that does not involve this silly ball. In fact, the kettlebell is such an item. It is not the actual bell that promotes balance, but balance is acquired as a result of lifting the bell through various complex movements that activate the same musculature required for balance.
Renegade training prepares an individual’s mind and body to be adept at reacting to the chaos that occurs both in life and on the playing field. It does so by training on a variety of different terrains so when the unexpected presents itself you can react. By doing so the body is prepared to handle literally whatever comes your way. However, there is absolutely no instance where you will ever need to be prepared to stand on a Bosu ball. The gym is the most stable environment there is and neither representative of the chaos of daily life nor representative of the “fog of war” found on the playing field.
Stop wasting time training for balance, get off the Bosu ball. Train for the unknown, prepare for the unknown, be able to handle the unknown. RENEGADE – a completely balanced training program.

So, with the cluster of holidays in the rear view mirror, I of course want to share a short story with everyone.
This year Santa Claus must have had his a** is shape becaue I received two 70lb. kettlebells stuffed tightly into my stocking! Great gift for a guy like me and the reindeer were able to get in a great weighted gpp workout pulling the sleigh.
So like any kid when they receive a new gift……well I opened them up and “played” with them.
Over the river, through the woods and down to my basement I went. I tossed in my Henry Rollins CD.
As the lyrics of GRIP slapped off of the wall………well my grip was burnt! ( I was burnt!)
This is often a greatly overlooked training benefit to kettlebells.
Forget about the little “wrist curls”! Get some weight in your hands!
Want more? Need more?…………try swinging the kettlebell with a towel wrapped around the handle!
Want more? Need more?…..well….ask me

There are a myriad of serious training protocols that need to be adhered to when exercising. However, there is another key component to fitness that, although not serious, cannot be overlooked. This is the fun factor. Exercise should be fun. Many programs and regimens air on the side of militant which tend to push already reluctant individuals even further away. People have enough stress in their lives and exercise should not be one of them.
On the other hand, exercise that encompasses the fun factor will draw people in. Group fitness offers just that. An hour of fun where participates listen to blaring beats, hoot and holler and share in a positive experience while they workout. It is also a situation that easily lends itself to the creation of friendship.
Don’t miss out on all the fun! Contact a Renegade Trainer in your area to experience a kettlebell class today.

A wise man (he shall remain nameless) once told me that I should always be training for performance. At first I really didn’t understand this comment, because like a majority of the population I envisioned a group of athletes training hard in the off-season for their upcoming sport.
Well that was then, and this is now. Training for performance is training for life. Life is full of unpredictable situations and we must be prepared mentally and physically for what we may encounter.
Making use of the kettlebell in your training is a great way to enhance the performance aspect of your training by acting as an extension of your body during movements.
This photo is of my client Rick performing single-arm kettlebell presses (with a 40lb bell) and pull-ups with a 20lb X-vest. If this isn’t an example of functional performance training then I’m not sure I know what does.

The word renegade brings to mind ideas of a person who leaves the pack and its ways behind and forges out his own path. Renegade Training is very much like that – the ideas and concepts involved are not what the typical trainer will apply and do not get typical results. Kettlebells are a tool that many Renegade Trainers use to achieve these atypical results. My company is called Victory Fitness and our slogan is “A different way to a different you!” If you want to make a change, the Renegade system is the way to go.
I am Matt Slaymaker, a senior level Renegade Trainer in Iowa. I am a Kettlebell and DMC Specialist. I also am the owner of Victory Fitness, a company that specializes in Renegade Equipment and Renegade Training. You can contact me at renegadeiowa@southslope.net.

A key component of any exercise regimen is flexibility training. Flexibility is extremely important for both men and women alike for a number of reasons including improving range of motion, decreasing injury and recovery time. This is especially important for the aging population to stay on top of because, as people age, flexibility decreases. Additionally with more individuals leading sedentary lifestyles, it is crucial more now than ever before that flexibility become a daily part of one’s life to avoid the risk of pain and injury. The modern day worker is a great example of someone who flexibility training would greatly benefit. They are at extreme risk for things like lower back pain due to the many hours spent sitting hunched over staring at a computer screen. This can be easily rectified with at least ½ hour spent stretching per day.
Not only is flexibility key for the sedentary individual it is absolutely critical for the active person as well. All forms of weight lifting whether it be kettlebells, dumbbells, or the Olympic Bar require the user to have significant range of motion in order to execute the lifts correctly. The best way to increase range of motion is by including a session of stretching at the end of every workout. I suggest utilizing John Davies’s DVD, “Pink It’s The New Black,” as the exercises are highly effective for all fitness levels. Make this part of your daily routine and the gains on health will be tremendous.

The diet industry is a 54 billion dollar industry with 95% failure rate. Those numbers are staggering considering Americans are more overweight that ever before. It is evident with these statistics that diets don’t work. That is because most diets focus on caloric restriction. However, reducing calories make for tired and cranky people. Without enough calories the body has nothing to fuel itself and the results are catastrophic. Not only will you feel miserable but when the body is not receiving enough calories to keep it going, it is forced to break down precious muscle for fuel. This is referred to as catabolic. The catabolic state is something to avoid at all costs because muscle contains mitochondria, the energy producing factories of the body. That means even when the body is at rest precious muscles are still burning calories. Therefore, muscle equals a faster metabolism.
